I am committed to making this portfolio website accessible to everyone, including people with disabilities. This statement outlines the steps taken and the current accessibility status of aanvikarmakar.com.
Our Commitment
This website aims to conform to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1, Level AA. These guidelines explain how to make web content more accessible to people with disabilities, including those who use assistive technologies such as screen readers, keyboard navigation, or voice control.
What We Have Done
- Semantic HTML: Pages use meaningful, structured HTML5 elements (headings, landmarks, lists) to support screen reader navigation.
- Alt text: All portfolio images include descriptive alternative text for screen reader users.
- Keyboard navigation: All interactive elements — links, buttons, video controls — are reachable and operable via keyboard alone.
- Focus indicators: Visible focus outlines are present on interactive elements.
- Colour contrast: Text and background colour combinations meet or exceed WCAG AA contrast ratios.
- Responsive design: The website is fully usable on mobile, tablet, and desktop screen sizes.
- Skip navigation: The page structure allows assistive technologies to skip repetitive content.
- Video accessibility: The showreel video includes player controls and is muted by default to avoid unexpected audio.
- Reduced motion: Animations are subtle and do not rely on motion to convey information.
- ARIA labels: Key sections and navigation elements include ARIA labels for screen reader context.
Known Limitations
While I strive for full accessibility, some limitations currently exist:
- Video captions: The showreel video does not currently include closed captions or a transcript. I am working to address this.
- Complex images: Some editorial photographs convey mood and artistic intent that may be difficult to fully describe in alt text.
- Third-party embeds: Any future third-party embedded content may not meet the same accessibility standards as the core website.
Technical Approach
This website is built with:
- Valid, semantic HTML5
- CSS for visual presentation only — content and structure are not dependent on stylesheets
- Vanilla JavaScript for progressive enhancement — core content is accessible without JavaScript
- No reliance on auto-playing audio or flashing content
